When Chuck Jones was looking for a new character to pit against Porky Pig in 1947, he recalled one from a film directed by former colleague Bob Clampett, "Porky's Pooch" (1941). The simple premise, a homeless dog searching for a master and "selling himself" to anyone who would potentially give him a chance, appealed to Jones. Jones "adopted" the dog character, gave him a name ("Charlie", of course) and a more appealing design. In the 2000 documentary "Chuck Jones: Extremes and Inbetweens: A Life
