The intersection of Pond Street and First North Street is the former site of Saint Joseph’s Cemetery. The cemetery was the original Catholic cemetery of the Northside. It was established in November of 1859 and an estimated 6,000 former Syracuse citizens were buried there. The cemetery was in use until 1953 when neglect and vandalism forced its closure. In the 1960s, any remains were exhumed and moved to nearby Assumption Cemetery when a Wegmans (now Tops) supermarket and parking lot were built
