Chapter 2: treating bub (Named Teeny) first Usually doing a rescue or mange treatment with two wombats simultaneously is incredibly difficult. In this case they made it easy as bub wandered off and I was able to sneak up on her and give her treatment for sarcoptic mange. She looks bad but it can still be turned around. She is aware of me, no obvious wounds and no decaying smell of infection. As always I prefer my trusty extendable pole so I can get her gently and not have to chase her or scare h

Another wombat treated for mange early this morning. We suspect it’s Stu, a wombat treated once last year before he disappeared. One dose Bravecto is not enough so it’s starting from scratch again and hopefully we can give him two follow up doses. Lucky for him he has most of the fur on his back but his front legs and torso is covered in thick plaques If you want to support us in helping them please do. It costs us an average of $250 per wombat for treatment. You can donate at www.wombatrescue.c

We are besotted with all things wombat. Poop and feet generally are two things that I get excited about. We’re off to do treatment today. We have found so many sick wombats during the course of our work just in the last month that looking at this healthy little baby makes me grateful that she has a chance But we cant keep raising them with no safe areas out there to release so we are doing our bit to try and combat mange at least. We can’t do much about all the other challenges they will face #w

This is the moment we pulled Lanny free from the tiny space he crawled into. All in all it was a 6 hour operation of the team waiting, planning, fashioning equipment from everything we had in our trucks and doing tbe rescue. I think the SES would be proud of us Lanny is a big boy and not only has mange but was attacked and lost a huge chunk of skin across his back. It became flyblown and had thousands of maggots crawling in his wounds He is a fighter and still alive. Ive killed most of the maggo

Wombat Stu is one of those that we treat and then he disappears. Only to pop out a month later, sicker than ever. We haven’t been able to give him consistent consecutive doses and too long passed in between each dose. We were nearby today on another job for the solar farm and thought we can look for him as the sun was just coming out. Didn’t find him where we normally do so we left but just outside the gate we saw him grazing. He is looking pretty rough but he is very alert and mobile and bolted

There is so much happening at the moment that Im finding it hard to sit down for 10 minutes to update you all. So this is a little medley of videos of the last week of the babies. Enjoy💚 They are just perfect and Walan is doing very well. He hasn’t picked up any significant weight yet but at least not losing any. He adores Emmie who is very clearly the boss girl. Im just grateful… they are precious moments that I cherish Emmie and Sami's first encounter with the lawn. Clearly Em is not impresse

Forest is alive and doing well. Our newly built burrow in our RSPCA enclosure is small and not t-junctioned so that we can get to them quickly if we need to. The burrow is about 5° cooler than the outside in full sun and much more now that there is shade-cloth over thanks to our handy volunteers and the @rspca_act staff who helped install it yesterday for him. We also wet the ground inside and he has dug this deeper to get to that really cool soil. He ate all the grass our volunteers brought him

Continued our scouting along the Murrumbidgee river to assess the damage it’s done to our wombat populations after the massive flooding last week In this area though the riverbanks are much wider and gentler sloped so the river didnt push up as high although it was still a good 4m higher than it was tonight which is an enormous amount of water We found 3 wombats grazing and one had early signs of mange so I gave her a direct treatment She is just gorgeous and gave me hope | Wombat Rescue

An incredible lucky day for this wombat. Its 1.5 hours drive for us to get here and softly raining. We expected to put a camera up with a flap as this sick wombat lives under the house But as soon as we were on the access road I spotted a wombat shape in the garden She was out and about and we got a dose on her quickly before she bolted What made it harder was the wind was blowing on my back so blowing my smell directly towards her. I could see her sniffing the air as she became aware of me so I

We were asked to provide assistance to a wombat that found itself trapped in a dog breeders yard and couldnt get out. It was a difficult rescue as she is very round and very lively and I had difficulty in catching her, but when I did, volunteer Jen did a quick pouch check and found she has a pinkie on board. Both perfectly healthy but mum is clearly displaced and also in no uncertain terms not welcome on the property. For mum and bubs safety we had to remove them from this area as they were at r

We are wrapping up our mange treatment programs for 2024. Early morning last Sunday one of our volunteers was servicing a burrow flap (you can see the flap covered in dirt😊) when she filmed this beautiful girl having a snooze in her burrow. We will continue our program in the new year and adding new transects to our growing treatment area along Murrumbidgee and Molonglo rivers. While we don’t always see wombats during treatment, which is a good sign, we absolutely love seeing a healthy wombat d

After we left Kosta we were asked to attend to a sick wombat sleeping in a hayshed on a large stock farm When we arrived he was up and about but luckily we spotted him. He doesn’t have much fur and it was 10° and windy at 2:30 pm His right eyelid is completely fused shut and his ledt eye has fused in a semi open position which means he can see a little but he cant blink or close his eye. It never ceases to amaze me that they just silently endure this horrible suffering and keep on living, grazi

Rushed off to Mt Fairy late yesterday when the call came in we always want to hear.. “the wombat is out” The meaning of this is that we’ve usually been notified before (in this case a month ago) and went out but wombat was nowhere to be seen. So we know each passing day increases their agony and brings them closer to dying So when I was told the wombat is out I was so happy. And good timing too. He is a very cranky boy and not happy with the medicine but he will hopefully feel better soon First

We were called by the Urban Wildlife Ranger team about a wombat sleeping in a carport in one of our western suburbs. Not a safe place and not sure if we have an injured wombat on our hands, we went out there to assess and capture. It was a young female, no mange and uninjured. Most likely a young one just dispersed and wasn’t able to find herself a burrow and safe territory. She had some old scabbed over bitemarks on her rump. In cases like this we try to find her a safe alternative and an empty

Happy #wombatwednesday from all of us Autumn is almost over but we’re trying to make the most of sunny afternoons and the girls love zooming around me on the grass. They are so happy. They are over 6kg (Misha is almost 7kg) so they’re growing up fast. They will need their burrows within the next 3 or 4 months and start to transition to living outdoors more than indoors. I cant believe they were tinies just a few months ago. | Wombat Rescue

The other part of this exciting day is Winnie’s rehabilitation is going well and her shoulder and foot is getting better. Walking around in the enclosure has helped tremendously. So she will be moving up to the bigger Kosta enclosure so that Dipsy can move into the smaller enclosure. I visited her yesterday to do final checks and she was very playful. First time she’s shown me her headshakes (wombats do this when they are feeling happy, playful and silly 😜). She is an absolute sweetheart and al

Urgent message.. a sick wombat has been reported in the Point Hut dog park . Please stay clear of him I understand from people in the park that he is a regular and been there a while. He is unfortunately very unwell and not only has mange but has also been attacked. It could be wombat but some of the marks on him indicate dog wounds and given this is an off leash area it would make sense All I’m asking is to please be aware of him and ensure your dog doesn’t go near him. The amount of times we g

We found an amazingly secluded site with a small population of wombats. Far away from any danger. Except mange. To my surprise, we found 2 wombats (I suspect both female) looking quite old. I dont normally see old wombats, they just don't survive that long in the wild. One has cataracts and one is gray. Both have mange but seem to be coping and surviving well. We have implemented mange programs all across the ACT by now and the results are incredible. We stand by our use of smaller but safer dos

Ruby has gained strength over the past 5 days and was becoming restless in the critical care space at my home so I knew she was ready to be moved to an enclosure where she can roam and have some freedom while she fully regains all her strength. I dont want her to become stressed in a confined space. She is the most chilled girl ever. While we were fixing her shelter house to be insulated against the cold she just munched on her grass nearby. I hope this will be a good outcome for her When we are

After 3 weeks in care it was time for Mony to move to an outside enclosure. Her survival has been a joy to watch and a miracle from where she was to now. She was ready and although it’s still a bit cold and her new fur is short, I also have to consider her mental health and she was getting restless being confined. The enclosure had time to rest so the grass is nice and long. We fixed the burrow Dipsy made and she has two boxes filled with hay if she so chooses. She has options inside the enclosu

I took this video about 2 weeks ago. It was incredibly busy with so many little orphans coming into care. A lot has happened in just two short weeks but Im reflecting tonight on this dire need. A room full of little orphan wombats. It makes me so sad knowing all these little souls lost their mums in horrific circumstances and some come in with injuries of their own. I also feel blessed beyond measure for the privilege to be working with these incredible animals. As carers we put ourselves out th

Harry and Freya are now around 3.5 kg and moved into this inside pen. We do outside play under supervision so that they can start to get used to it, digging, grazing and eating dirt. It’s a learning curve for them but very necessary for their health and development. But early morning it’s inside play and bottle time before they go to bed. Baby wombats in care need a very strict routine and to be contained at all times. They are not allowed to roam the house unattended and unsupervised. As with a
