Coloured Pencil TIP: The first thing I always do before starting my coloured pencil drawings is take a kneaded eraser and lighten up my sketch outline. If you leave your graphite sketch too dark and then layer your coloured pencils over the top you run the risk of having your graphite lines become visible through your coloured pencil shading. Seeing these grey outlines will really detract from the realism of the drawing. So, it is always best to lighten up your sketch beforehand. #drawing #colou

One of my favourite tricks for adding details to my hair and fur coloured pencil drawings is to use an X-acto knife. Once I have added all of my layers of coloured pencil (starting with a base layer of the lightest colours) I then go in with the x-acto knife and use it to scrape away the coloured pencil, revealing lighter details. This technique works because you are just scraping off the top layers of coloured pencil to reveal the lighter layers underneath. Have you tried this trick before? Thi

A genius supply that I love using for my coloured pencil drawings is these pencil extenders. They really allow me to get the most out of each pencil. When your coloured pencils get too small to hold just pop them in a pencil extender and you can use them for a few extra drawings! If you're just starting out with coloured pencil and want the lowdown on all of the handy supplies and must have materials download my FREE Coloured Pencil Supply Guide here: https://bit.ly/35kufKB #drawing #coloredpenc

Picking colours for a drawing can be overwhelming. That is why I try to break the process down as much as I can to make it more simple. Here is my strategy: 1) Identify the colours in my reference 2) Create swatches of all of the potential coloured pencils for each colour I identified in my reference. 3) Circle the best pencil colour for each area out of my potential options 4) Test my colour selections to make sure they are accurate to the reference How do you go about picking colours for your

A great way to blend coloured pencils is to use the burnishing method. The burnishing technique involves adding lots of pressure to your coloured pencils during the final stages of layering. Burnishing helps fuse all of the layers of coloured pencil together and leaves an ultra smooth result. TIP: Make sure you leave burnishing until your final layers because burnishing flattens the tooth of the paper, preventing the paper from being able to grip onto more layers of pencil. #coloredpencil #drawi

Coloured Pencil TIP: When it comes to changing between two colours in a drawing a lot of the time you need to create a smooth transition from one colour to the other. This can be tricky as you don't want it to be obvious where you stopped one colour and started another. Here's how to do it. Go in with your first colour and start shading. As you get to where you want to transition into the next colour gradually reduce your pressure on the pencil so that your shading is getting lighter and lighter

Struggle with trying to preserve details like whiskers and white bits of fur in your coloured pencil drawings? Here is a tip for you! Before colouring, go in with a small crafting knife (I use an X-acto knife) and indent your tiny highlights into the paper. Make sure to only indent and not cut the paper. Once the highlights have been indented you can carry on layering your coloured pencil on top like normal, but the pencils won't be able to get into the indented grooves, keeping your highlights

One of my favourite things about blending coloured pencils with solvent it how easily you can add highlights over darker colours. This is something that is very hard to do with other coloured pencil blending techniques. I go in with my layers of coloured pencil, in this case pink merging into blue and blended out the shading with solvent. Once the solvent had dried I was able to go back in the white pencil and add lots of highlights. The reason this is possible is because blending with solvent l

Find preserving highlights when using solvent to blend your coloured pencils difficult? Then todays tip is for you! TIP: To preserve highlights start by applying white pencil wherever the brightest highlights are. You will want to do this before adding any layers of coloured pencil to the paper. Once you have added the white pencil you can then go in with all of your other colours and layer them like normal. Time for the magic! When you blend with the solvent over the top the highlights should p

Always end up in a mess when you use solvent to blend coloured pencils? Here are a few DO'S and DON'TS for this technique: DONT: 1) Use lots of solvent on your paintbrush 2) Forget to clean your brush off inbetween colours 3) Blend your dark colours into your lighter colours (this will leave you with muddy colours) DO: 1) Blot excess solvent onto a tissue before blending 2) Clean your brush before blending a whole new colour 3) Start by blending your lighter colours first and blending your darke
