The San Diego Padres wasted no time in providing run support to starter Nick Pivetta. The San Diego offense staked Pivetta to a five-run lead before he threw a single pitch and the Padres cruised to an 8-1 win over the Washington Nationals at Nationals Park, Sunday.

Xander Bogaerts hit a grand slam in the first inning, Elias Díaz also homered and the San Diego Padres routed the Washington Nationals 8-1 on Sunday.

And then there is the deadline. The Padres’ needs are not unlike almost every other contender: A starting pitcher. Another outfield or DH bat, preferably right-handed. And perhaps another reliever, though the Padres are dealing from a position of strength rather than the relief misery many other clubs find themselves in.
