CHICAGO (CBS) -- A day after Mayor Brandon Johnson announced his entire hand-picked school board would resign, dozens of members of the City Council blasted the recent developments in an open letter. Following the announcement of the resignations, the 41 aldermen wrote, "This is unprecedented and brings further instability to our school district."

All seven members of the board of education for Chicago Public Schools are resigning. Their expected resignations have paved the way for Mayor Brandon Johnson to appoint board members who agree with his goals.

The entire Chicago Board of Education – all seven members – is stepping down later this month, as the mayor continues to be at odds with Chicago Public Schools CEO Pedro Martinez, who he wants removed from office.
