Syria's Druze have reached a ceasefire agreement with the Syrian government in Sweida that will take immediate effect, Druze religious leader Sheikh Yousef Jarbou said in a video broadcast by state media on Wednesday.
The so-called Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported a sudden Israeli incursion into the Druze-majority town of Qalaat Jandal in the Damascus countryside, 35 kilometers from the capital. Local sources also reported that Israeli occupation forces had reached the town of Qatna, some 10 kilometers from Damascus.
Israel's Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said its forces were "working to save our Druze brothers and to eliminate the regime's gangs". The Syrian foreign ministry condemned Israel's "treacherous aggression".
Syrian leader Ahmed al-Sharaa accused Israel of trying to fracture Syria and promised to protect its Druze minority on Thursday, after U.S. intervention helped end deadly fighting between government forces and Druze fighters in the south.
